How to Make Money Online as a Coach: A Step-by-Step Guide to Selling Digital Products

You have knowledge that coaches in your niche would genuinely pay for.

That is not a bold claim. It is a fact.

The framework you use with your clients. The process you have developed for solving a specific problem. The shortcuts you have figured out through experience. All of it has value to someone who is earlier in the journey than you are.

Selling digital products is how you take that knowledge, package it properly, and make it available to people who need it at a price that works for them and an income stream that works for you.

This guide covers the exact steps to get your first digital product out of your head, onto a platform, and in front of the right buyers. No fluff. Just the process.

Do this before you build anything.

The most common reason digital products do not sell is not a design problem or a pricing problem. It is a clarity problem. The product was built for a vague idea of a person rather than a specific, real one.

Why Digital Products Work So Well for Coaches

As a coach your income is traditionally tied to your time.

No sessions, no income. It is that simple. And that constraint puts a very real ceiling on how much you can earn without working more hours.

Digital products break that ceiling.

You create something once and it can be sold repeatedly. To someone in Lagos at 11pm. To someone in London on a Sunday morning. To someone in Toronto during their lunch break. All without you being involved in the transaction at all.

And here is something important that often gets overlooked. Digital products are not just income. They are trust builders. When someone buys a product from you and gets real value from it, they become a warm lead for your higher-ticket coaching offers. The product sells you before you ever speak to them.

Step 1: Decide What Your Product Will Help Someone Do

Start with a problem, not a product idea.

The best digital products are built backwards from a specific, recurring frustration that your ideal client is actively trying to solve right now. Not a problem you think they should care about. One they are already searching for answers to.

Ask yourself honestly: what is the one question coaches in my niche ask me most often? What do people DM me about? What topic generates the most responses when I post about it?

Those questions are your product brief.

Once you have identified the problem, define the outcome. What will someone be able to do, have, or decide after working through your product? That outcome becomes your product promise. And your product promise is the most important sentence in your entire sales process.

Action: Write this sentence right now. After working through [your product name], my buyer will be able to [specific outcome] without [specific obstacle or pain they want to avoid]. If you cannot complete that sentence clearly, you are not ready to build the product yet. Get the clarity first.

Step 2: Choose the Right Format for Your Knowledge

Not all knowledge needs to be delivered the same way.

Some things are best explained through structured writing. Some are better demonstrated visually. Some require the buyer to do the thinking themselves through guided prompts and frameworks.

Here is a quick guide to choosing the right format.

  • Ebook or PDF guide — best when your knowledge can be clearly explained through structured writing with step-by-step instructions, frameworks, and examples
  • Template or swipe file — best when your buyer needs a done-for-you starting point they can adapt immediately
  • Workbook — best when the value is in guided reflection and decision-making rather than information transfer
  • Prompt pack — best when your buyer needs a bank of ready-to-use inputs for tools they are already using
  • Mini course or video training — best when the transformation requires seeing something demonstrated rather than just reading about it

Start with the format you can create to a genuinely high standard right now with the time and tools you have available.

A beautifully executed 15-page PDF will always outsell a rushed 10-module course. Quality matters more than format prestige.

Action: Look at the product idea you identified in Step 1. Ask yourself: does my buyer need to read, do, watch, or use this knowledge? Choose the format that best serves the way they need to receive it. Then commit to that format completely.

Step 3: Build It to a Standard That Reflects Your Expertise

Your digital product is a direct representation of your coaching standard.

When someone buys it, they are forming an impression of what working with you at a higher level would feel like. A poorly designed, disorganised product tells them one thing. A clean, well-structured, genuinely useful product tells them something completely different.

You do not need expensive software. Canva is free and powerful enough to create professional-looking digital products when used with intention.

What you do need is structure. Every product should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. It should open by acknowledging the problem the buyer came with. It should move through your framework or process in a logical sequence. And it should close with a clear next step that naturally bridges to the next stage of working with you.

Remove anything that is padding. If a page, a section, or a module does not directly serve the product's core promise, it does not belong there.

Action: Before you start building, create a simple outline. Write the problem at the top. Write the outcome at the bottom. Then map out the logical steps between them. That outline is your product structure. Build each section to serve that structure and nothing else.

Step 4: Price It to Reflect the Value, Not the Time It Took You to Create It

This is where most coaches get it wrong.

They price their digital products based on how long the product is, how long it took to create, or how affordable they want it to seem. None of those are the right measure.

The right measure is the value of the outcome it delivers.

A 12-page guide that saves a coach five hours every week and directly contributes to them booking their next client is worth significantly more than a few dollars. Price it accordingly.

As a general framework, your free resource sits at zero and captures leads. Your entry-level paid product sits between five and twenty-five dollars and removes the risk from a first purchase. Your core product sits between twenty-five and one hundred dollars and delivers your most complete methodology. Your premium offers sit above that threshold.

Set your price with confidence. Hold it. Constant discounting teaches your audience to wait for a sale rather than to buy at full price, and it quietly signals that you do not fully believe in the value of what you are offering.

Action: Write down the specific outcome your product delivers. Then ask yourself: what would it be worth to my ideal client to have that outcome? Price your product relative to that value. Not to your doubt. Not to what you think they can afford. To the genuine value of the result.

Step 5: List It on the Right Platform for Your Audience

Where you sell is as important as what you sell.

For coaches selling to Nigerian and African audiences, Selar is the right choice. It accepts Naira payments through local payment methods your buyers already trust. It delivers your product automatically after purchase. And it has a checkout experience that does not create unnecessary friction.

For coaches selling to diaspora audiences in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia, Gumroad is the most frictionless option. It handles international payments in multiple currencies, delivers products instantly, and is recognised and trusted by buyers in those markets.

You do not have to choose one. List your product on both. Use Selar for your Nigerian market at Naira-appropriate price points. Use Gumroad for your international audience. Same product. Two storefronts. Both working for you simultaneously.

Action: Create your Selar and Gumroad accounts this week if you have not already. Set up your storefront profile on both. Upload your product. Write your product description. Your store is now open.

Step 6: Write a Product Description That Speaks to One Specific Person

Your product description is doing sales work 24 hours a day.

It is the conversation that happens between your product and a potential buyer when you are not in the room. And if it speaks to everyone in general, it will connect with no one in particular.

The description that converts opens with the problem. Not with your credentials. Not with a list of what is included. With the exact frustration your ideal buyer is sitting with right now.

Then it moves to the outcome. What will they be able to do after purchasing? Be specific. Vague promises do not convert. Specific, believable outcomes do.

Keep it short. Keep it honest. Keep it written for that one specific person.

Action: Write your product description using this structure. You know that feeling when [specific frustration]. This [product type] is for coaches who [specific situation] and want to [specific outcome] without [pain they want to avoid]. Inside you will find [brief, specific description of what is included]. Keep it under 120 words. Then read it back and ask: would my ideal client feel seen by this? If yes, publish it.

Step 7: Drive Traffic to Your Product Through Content and Pinterest

Creating the product and listing it is not the end. It is the beginning.

A product sitting on a storefront page with no traffic will not generate sales. The traffic system is what transforms a good product into a consistently selling one.

The most sustainable traffic system for coaches selling digital products is the blog to Pinterest funnel. Write a blog post that addresses a specific problem your product solves. Link your product naturally within that post. Create a pin image for the post. Publish it to the right Pinterest board.

Pinterest then serves that pin to people who are actively searching for that topic. Not scrolling passively. Actively searching. That intent is the reason Pinterest traffic converts into product sales better than most social media traffic.

And a pin you create today can drive traffic to your product for months or years. That is the compound power of search-based traffic and it is why this funnel is the foundation of a sustainable digital product business.

Action: Write one blog post this week that addresses a problem your digital product directly solves. Include your product link naturally in the body of the post and again at the end. Create one pin for that post in Canva at 1000 by 1500 pixels. Publish it. Your traffic system is now running.

You Do Not Need a Large Audience to Start Selling

This is the part that stops most coaches from ever starting.

They wait until they have more followers. A bigger list. More credibility. More experience. And while they wait, the knowledge they already have sits unused and unmonetised.

You do not need a large audience. You need the right product, the right platform, and a consistent traffic strategy. Start small. Build well. Improve based on real feedback from real buyers.

The first sale is always the most significant. Not because of the money. Because it proves that your knowledge has value to someone other than yourself.

Start there. Everything else follows.
